Chapter 5

Being able to talk to ghosts had made Darcy’s life so hard when she was a teenager. The mysterious was all around us, as she liked to say, but being mysterious didn’t always make you popular. It was hard to make friends when the spirits of the dead kept sitting down next to you in the lunchroom or at the movies, wanting to talk about their problems.

On the other hand, there were some definite advantages to her gift.

She slammed the door to her bedroom just as hard as she could when she got there. Grace could sit down there in the kitchen and wait for her, or she could leave. In her present mood she just didn’t care. If she was going to take Vic’s side, then it really didn’t matter where she kicked up her heels.

In the bedroom was one of her two emergency spirit communication kits. This one was a little more elaborate than the one Darcy kept in her car. A little bigger, and a little more complete. There were the candles and their holders, and the containers of certain spices, which were basic supplies needed for any spirit communication. There was also a pair of earplugs to mute out the sound of the living world while she delved into the world of the dead. There was a Ziploc bag of salt, and a piece of chalk, and a few other things that she’d found handy in different situations. She kept it in her closet, right next to an antique silver box with little legs at the corners. It was just an antique now, and nothing more, no matter how much trouble it had caused her a few months ago.

The spirit communication box, however, was what she wanted now.

If the world was going to try to frame Jon Tinker, the man she loved, then she was going to go right to the source and prove he was innocent. She would talk to the victim, Jason Fields.

She knew she wasn’t in the proper mental state to even consider performing a spirit communication. Ideally, she should be centered, and focused, and thinking about nothing else but the steps it took to bridge the gap between life and death. Even someone as practiced as she was could get into serious trouble if she went into a spirit communication with a mind this unsettled. The forces of the spirit world were nothing to play around with.

Kids, don’t try this at home.

Angrily, she swiped the spirit communication kit off the shelf and shoved the closet door closed. It didn’t matter what the risk was for her personally. Jon would be counting on her.

Kicking dirty clothes out of the way, she cleared an area on the bedroom floor, and set the box on the foot of the bed. The lid flipped open, and there was everything she needed.

The candles came out first, and the ceramic discs she used for setting them in place. They were thick candles, round and fat and blueberry scented.
